Sneezing your head off? Figures.

Are you sneezing your head off as we head into fall? Or are your eyes watering and pooling like lakes?

That figures. The Carolinas are hard on allergy sufferers, according to the 2008 Fall Allergy Capitals list -- produced by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America and sponsored by allergy med ZYRTEC -- released today. Three of the top 5 allergy capitals are in the Carolinas.

That top 5:
1. Greensboro, N.C.
2. Greenville, S.C.
3. Little Rock, Ark.
4. Raleigh-Durham
5. Jackson, Miss.

Charlotte ranked 20th.

On Tuesday, check out the Observer's Health section for an article by my colleague Karen Garloch on acupuncture for treating allergies.

Now for a question: How are your allergies here compared with other cities you've lived in?

I've been here for just about 3 years, and my allergies are far worse than in Florida. Down there, I could have stuck my head in a bowl of pine pollen and not had a problem. Here though, I was living on Benadryl 24/7 for months at a time. I finally started on allergy shots and prescription Allegra and I'm better, but there are still times that I have to sneak a Benadryl pill in. I was too young to remember any problems I may have had when my family moved to Florida, so maybe I was just as bad down there at first too. I'm hoping I get over this stuff by next spring though.

I'm a Charlotte native, and my allergies are just as bad as anyone who just moved here. I don't quite understand why, but my allergies have gotten worse over the years. When I vacation in Florida or Jamaica, I never have any allergies, go figure. Must be all the trees and greenery around here.

My allergies are in the spring with all the Oak pollen. Thank god I don't an issues (allergies that is) this time of year. The spring is enough for me.

I never had allergies before moving here from Boston - about 4 years ago - now I'm a stuffed up, sneezing maniac! I get terrible sinus headaches from the congestion of the allergies - no fun! Seems to be all seasons, but worst in the spring and summer.

I never had allergies until I moved to NC - first to the Greensboro area, then to Charlotte. Mine are a constant struggle to deal with year-round. I have chronic sinus congestion, watery eyes & sinus headaches. I take an arsenol of allergy medications all year round: Alavert-D 12 hour once a day, Mucinex nasal spray for in between and Zyrtec at night. Occasinally Benadryl as well. It's awful down here!!!!!!!

I'm from NY and we don't have allergies there. I can't believe how bad it is here, I can barely move, talk, or think. When will the backwards hicks here figure out they need to get rid of the allergies?

Seriously though, if you've never experienced them before I feel bad for you. We have lots of greenery around here, and some of it is hostile to your sinuses. You'll get used to it, and if you don't go for the shots.

Have any of you tried the "NETTIE POT" method that Dr Oz on the Oprah show demonstrated. I use to live in Va and talk about allergies, I had to be admitted to the hospital for treatment. Finally it was under control when I moved to Charlotte, a couple of years ago, all heck broke loose. In and out of the hospital several times. I tried the 'NETTIE POT" and it works miracles. None of the allergy problems I had last year. Wow, simply rinsing the sinuses is all that it takes to limit the issues of allergies. I don't know if this will work for everyone, but it sure worked for me...

I used to have very bad allergies when I moved down to Charlotte. This year, I took probiotics regularly and the symptoms were significantly reduced. There was even a study released earlier this year that confirmed this...

I have Chronic ASTHMA and I was told that next to the OCEAN you wont have asthma problems because of SALT air killing pollen and the OCEAN makes more OXYGEN.
When I go to FLORIDA I can throw my medicine away, now !Heres a real tip DO NOT DRINK SPRING WATER this makes your sinus andasthma worse because SPRING water has pollen and DISTILLED water doesnt. HISTIMINES will start up when you drink spring water causing your autoimmune system to start up ( auto immune starts the sneezing and water works trying to kill a infection. I have studies all this because of my health.

My doctor said " Charlotte has the worst air because it moves from west to east and your getting Los angelos , atlanta and others air from all over, the buck stops here . And the ceasn is moving air inward to stop all the Nations air and creates a downward pressure that causes headaches and higher than normal BAROMETRIC PRESSURE thats wh more aspirin is sold here than any where else.

Do NOT drink SPRING water it makes things much worse; Only drink distilled and this will also help you retain water through the hot summer. Use a sinus cleanser from walmart and this also reduces siunitis. I have to stick a Q-tip up my nasal until it touches my brain to get the infection out . sinceusing equate saline nasal cleaner I havent had a cold in years this is the cure for the common cold I discovered it .

The Asthma and Allergy Foundation releases this list each year and different cities always appear. Could it be that they're just trying to generate press?

Oh yeah, www.gobacktoohio.com.
