Newcomer remorse in Banktown?

Banktown has lost some glitter.

Cititgroup is buying Wachovia, one of Charlotte's big banks and a leader on the national banking scene. Wachovia was pummeled by subprime debt.

So here's a question for newcomers, particulary newcomer bankers: Any "buyer's" remorse out there? Are you regretting your move, wishing you'd stayed put?

But it's not just bankers who might have opinions, I know. On Monday, I wrote about newcomers to the region and how Charlotte has a history of attracting people -- in all industries -- who move here without jobs. One woman in that story, newcomer Pam Bush, said she regrets not leaving Akron sooner. Now the market is flooded with people like her looking for jobs, she lamented. Click here to read that story.

And recent newcomers, let me know how you feel about living here now.

You "newcomers" (I prefer the term Yankee or interloper) are welcome to go back home. I'll even help you pack!

Its us "Yankees" that have made Charlotte a halfway respectable city. We were lured down to take skilled jobs that you simple-minded local yokels couldn't handle. We'd be happy to leave this town so you can go back to burning crosses and cheering while cars drive in circles.

1:57 if you would that would be great. Thanks

All I hear is these Yankees complaining, about the city, the people, everything. If you hate it so much MOVE or shut up no one is making you stay.

This town has become world-class in a very short ammount of time. And I agreed to move here with my wife because of that.

Even though I have about 10 years of experience in the PR field, I've had only 4 interviews since January. And I'm quickly learning that it's more about who you know, than what you know. I'm definately questioning the choice of moving down here.

I don't see any native Charlottean's complaining about how their house values have sky-rocketed over the last few years because of the influx of us Yankees... who do you think bought all the homes that drove the market prices up?? Why do you think so many companies and retailers are opening up shop here? Because of the growth, because of "newcomers". So stop your complaining

We moved here about 5 years ago. We transferred alot w/my husband's company. I am still waiting for the Southern Hospitality to kick in. You wave at neighbors, they do not wave back, you buy their children's cookies, wreaths, cards, raffle tickets and magazines yet never get a thank you. Their dogs use your yard as a potty stop, never pick up, their kids pick your flowers, they do nothing but laugh. Yea, we yankees are crass, right? We say thank you, are kind to neighbors, respect other's property and learned manners up North. I guess Southerners are still waiting for the result of the Civil War. But, we did drive up the prices of your homes, if we didn't, your homes would be worthless today, we are the doctors, nurses and other professionals that were recruited from the North. We didn't really look to move here, your town and state came to us and romanced us through dinners, trips, flowers and so forth. Guess it is true, professionals have to come here so that you all can watch cars run in circles and watch sports in your lazy boys.

I've been in Charlotte for 19 years, so by relative terms, I'm almost native. I'm glad that people have moved here from the west, north and further south to participate in making this city a better place to live, and allowing Charlotte as a whole more opportunity in many areas. For those who don't like change (Yankees moving here as an example), embrace it and realize how it makes your life better. Please realize that it serves no purpose to tell "newcomers" to go back home other than to substantiate some claims that we are uneducated and lack class. To any newcomers adversely affected by recent developments, I wish you the best, as I do the native Charlotteans.

As long as Yankee carpetbaggers continue to degrade those fortunate to have been born in the South, I will have no respect for them. By the way, I have met and seen more of the stereotypical 'redneck types' up north than in the south.

poster at 2:52: Thank you for being a rational human being. For some odd reason, I always read the comments on this blog thinking that the north/south thing would go away and people would realize that we live in a great area with diverse people. But no, ignorance and general disrespect always seem to win the day. Thankfully a few mean spirted people are the exception, not the rule in Charlotte. Let's hope it stays that way.

Hey, aren't we all living in the UNITED States of America? People are free to come and go as they please wherever they want. What happened to kindness and civility? It works both ways.

I'm a native and welcome "Yankees". If fact some of them are good friends. They have brought diversity and prosperity to Charlotte. Charlotte would be a small town without them. Hospitality is not just a southern trait based on my experience!

Outside of a few city boosters (many of whom work for the Observer), most of us would couldn't care less about the chain retailers, higher property values (and property taxes!), and "prosperity" that you Yankees brought with you. Why? Because with "prosperity" came the reality of having to live among a bunch of pushy carpetbaggers. You may live here but you and your spawn will never be welcome.
