Where should this family live?

In yesterday's column, I wrote about Julia Allen, a Carolinas native who happens to be a Charlotte newcomer. While Allen, a vice president at Discovery Place uptown, is working here, she's not living here yet. She's commuting from Hickory until her family can relocate. It gives her time to get to know the area and where she and her family would like to live, Allen, 35, said.

I asked readers to suggest where in the area Allen and her family should consider calling their new home. I should have clarified that I wanted residents only, not home builders, Realtors, developers, etc. I got a few of those self-promotional pitches and just one, so far, from a resident suggesting her neighborhood.

Here's what Susan Wilkie-McHale:
"The Allen family should definitely take a look at the Cramer Mountain Properties. Just in the last month, three new homes have come up for sale, and they are incredible well priced properties. I work on Park Road, and a drive down Billy Graham Pkwy. Only takes about 35 minutes every morning. The school system here is great, the neighbors are awesome, and Cramer Mountain is definitely a safe haven for children."

If you would like to suggest the neighborhood or community you live in, please post it here. Thanks!

Should be a lot of homes for sale in Ballantyne and Piper Glen soon, after all the foreclosures finish up.

Don't believe me? Ask any mortgage broker.

I really enjoy living in Plaza Midwood personally. It's 2 miles outside of downtown, so it's close to everything. There are plenty of great restaurants, shops, etc. We even have our own little 'downtown' on Central Ave. Lots of diversity, plenty of ideas floating around. People in Plaza Midwood in general are very intelligent, forward thinking, and open minded without being uppity. I just love the laid back nature of the 'hood as we call it too. You can stroll into the nicest establishment in whatever you may want to wear (be it sweats or gucci), and you won't be out of place. Unlike many of the other in town neighborhoods, Plaza Midwood is very 'come as you are.' Housing prices are much more reasonable than many other of the overly gentrified areas. There are several great parks in the area too. Plaza Midwood is definitely worth checking out!

Old Stonehaven, between Sardis and Rama. Beautiful neighborhood, with a number of schools nearby. 15-20 minutes commute Uptown.

Pick a condo, any condo in center city. Support your local uptown. Nothing exists outside 277. You will be assimilated - resistance is futile.

Come look at the Beverly Crest neighborhood. It is centrally located to South Park, Ballantyne, Uptown and quaint little Matthews.

Beautiful homes in a wonderful neighborhood.

Here's a suggestion e-mailed to me today from Harriet Fredericksen:

"I want to say that the Allen family should check out Davidson before they decide on a new place to live. Davidson is a special town. It is near enough to Charlotte for getting to work or for attending events there. Davidson College has many activities and events that are open to all. The town of Davidson sponsors many activities for all ages and all residents. The schools are good and "The Village Green" is the place where town-folks gather for concerts, art shows, celebrations, sales and town activities. Best of all the people have diverse backgrounds. There is Lake Norman so close and a natural beauty can be enjoyed in residential areas, college areas, and at The Pines, a retirement community. Come look us over, Julia."

East Charlotte definitely has its share of problems, but I live in a little subdivision called Marlwood Acres. Literally, it is Charlotte's best kept secret. Right off Lawyers Road, headed to Mint Hill. Nice calm neighborhood, affordable but great quality homes, nice neighbors (senior citizens and young families). It only takes me 15 minutes (not in rush hour) to get to Uptown.

Since you work uptown you should stay close to the area. Dilworth/Southend and Plaza midwood areas are both nice. You really don't want to be driving from Ballantyne or Lake Norman into Uptown everyday.

Why not consider the Ft Mill/Tega Cay area? There are lower South Carolina taxes, award winning school systems, and a quick commute uptown on I-77.
Home prices are much more reasonable too!
