Looking for a job?

My story yesterday about people moving to the Charlotte area without jobs sparked some discussion. Readers called and emailed to share their job-hunting stories.

I also got a call from Linda Kappauf at South Piedmont Community College, telling me about the Union County Career Fair. The fair will be 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 16 at SPCC's campus in Monroe. It is free to all job seekers and employers.

Last year's fair brought in about 600 job seekers and 80 employers, said Kappauf, director of human resource development. This year, with the slumping economy, she expects to see more people looking for work. So far more than 50 employers have signed up.

"It is a pretty good mixture of companies. It is not just your Burger Kings," she said. "We have three hospitals, Time Warner Cable, Union County local government, city of Monroe, the school system. We have a good mix and we are still adding to it."

I do think People should not come here without a job; Go to Washington D.C. if you want a great opportunity . Many People come here and fail and end up on welfare and food stamps and the homeless count is 8000 in Charlotte that we know. On the other hand in Washington D.C. there is only 12,000 homeless with 7.2 million People. People from other towns are arriving looking for work and end up one year before they find something.

At one time the Carolinas was bustling with new Companies but Textils, Furniture and Tobacco are out; Nothing has came here to replace 190,000 jobs they have lost. North Carolina needs a car plant to replace Freightliner, Phillip Morris and the list goes on and on.

All the new cars you see in Charloteare People who came here from other States loaded with equity mone or job transfers. Businesses close on a daily basis here because they have to nmany support businesses and not enough base jobs like 'Bank of America'and Wachovia. Bank jobs crank People in one door and years later out the back anyway. Many People I have talkedto working in grocer stores once worked for the banks here and are now cashiers.

As I have told this 'HEE HAW' Government five years ago , they need a couple automotive plants ; Alabama has four cars plants , Missisippi has the largest Nissan plant and West Georgia just got its first Toyota plant and many more sprinkled in between; My point is that if the Carolinas cant get something to replace Phillip Morris, Freightliner and many other industries it will shrivel into a welfare state like Missisippi used to be.
