Charlotte: Best City to Live

Charlotte is No. 1 when it comes to places to live, according to Relocate-America's Top 100 in 2008. Two other Carolina cities made the top 10. Greenville, S.C. ranked fourth and Asheville, last year's No. 1, came in seventh.

Relocate-America takes nominations for best city throughout the year. Would you nominate Charlotte? Why or why not? And if not, then what city would deserve your praise?

Yawn...

Another top 10 list... there should be a top 10 list of top ten lists.

really phoned this one in didn't you

I use to think this was a great city. It is clean and has alot of new shiny things but that doesnt mean anything when you have more and more crime everyday and are so taxed to death you cant get out and enjoy the shiny things.

Anonymous said...

No way. I don't think this city is all that it's cracked up to be. Too much crime, too much traffic, and lack of a "personality" like Atlanta or Charleston might offer. Nothing here to see except for some skyscrapers, strip malls, and Starbucks. I will move as soon as the opportunity arises.

PS - 3:50 if you think taxes HERE are bad, they ain't nothing compared to what they are up North, try paying what seems like a second mortgage for property taxes.

Clearly you need help coming up with ideas for this blog.

How about:

How long is your daily commute?
Have the recent increase in gas prices changed your driving habits, if so how?

What do you think is behind the recent increase in crime?
There has recently been an increase in gun purchases. Do you think this is a good idea? Have you recently purchased a gun for your protection, if so why and do you feel safer?

Dog park yes or no

Uptown baseball yes or no

Flying has gotten more expensive and every day there are stories about the horrors of flying, people being forced to sit on the toilet seat for 3 hours, overbooked, canceled flights, fees for extra bags, fees for not sitting in a middle seat. What has your flying experience been like lately? Do you think it has gotten worse? Do you think that congress should implement the passengers bill of rights?

Has the increase in travel changed your vacation plans? Is so and you are going to take a vacation closer to home, where are you going and what are you going to do there?

This one is a low hanging fruit – but it’s timely – same sex marriage yes or no

Charlotte is one of the few places in the country that is not suffering from a decline in home values. Why do you think that is the case? Do you own a home? If so how has the market value of your home changed? Why?

Pirates or ninjas

Penguins or puffins

Seeing as how it is spring now and we the people are spending more time outside, what is your favorite outdoor activity or restaurant.

Al Sharpton on local radio yes or no?

Spring related again – do you plant a garden, if so what do you typically plant.

Water restrictions are easing up and we can now do wild things like wash the car and water the lawn. Are there any habits that you started during the worst of the water crunch that you have retained? i.e. shutting off the water when you brush your teeth

Come on I’m not even pumped up on Starbucks and I can come up with ideas, lame ones perhaps but then I’m not being paid to do this.

The rest of America pays higher taxes... someone has to subsidize the south

I'm falling down laughing. The outfit that put together this "top 100" list is just trying to sell subscriptions for their marketing services to local real estate agents. The writeup about Charlotte is lifted word for word from Charlotte Convention and Visitors Bureau materials. All they do is look at which places are drawing relocation, tab them as the "top" places to live, make up a silly award, and fire it out to local real estate agents hoping to attract business. (Never mind that half the "relocation" is coming from south of the border....)

"Charlotte is No. 1 when it comes to places to live, according to Relocate-America's Top 100 in 2008."

This DESPITE the fact that it is chock-full of us Southerners.

Charlotte IS a nice place to live, but it currently has some HUGE problems which must be solved if it is to remain that way. First item on the agenda is to rein in spending on stupid stuff we don't need and to concentrate on the vitals.

Otherwise, it's easy to imagine a future not too far from now in which Charlotte has become just as dirty and dilapidated as cities up in the Northeast.

Unknown said...

Why is everyone always so negative? Every place is what you make of it. Sure, Charlotte isn't perfect, but what place is? There are a lot of great things about every city where everyone lives. Does that mean one has to be better than the other? Can't they just be different? Why does every comment have to be filled with vitrol toward other locations?

I hate to refer to the old cliche but.."Can't we all just get along?" Intelligent comments about pros/cons of one place over another would make for a much healthier conversation.

Asheville, last year's No. 1, came in seventh.

In reality the #1 city does not drop to #7 that quickly. The only reason that the rankings changed is that Relocate-America tweaked its criteria in order to generate controversy and drive traffic to its site. Who would do something that cheap and transparent? Certinaly not a Yankee "journalist" from Ohio (wink wink, nudge nudge, say no more).

Charlotte IS a nice place to live

CORRECTION: Charlotte WAS a nice place to live... before Yankees started showing up in droves. We have a saying around here: Yankees are like hemroids; some come down, then go back up and never bother you again. Others come down, hang around, and are a pain in the behind for the rest of your life.

Transparent. Pathetic.

Why are southerners so hateful?

The only people who don't like Charlotte anymore are the country bumpkins. Nobody cares about their opinions anyways.

Anonymous said...

The fact that Asheville was rated was the top place to live in the country last year just shows how dumb this list is. Asheville isn't even close to being the best place to live in NC, let alone the US.

Anonymous said...

There are numerous top 10 lists, each touting what it is they're trying to sell. There's no scientific basis for them, just opinion, and some statistics which can be massaged to look anyway you want them to look.

Fact is, nobody cares.

Got to love that southern hospitality !

Despite the banter here, I'll say I like Charlotte. But if I were one of the folks who sat around all day yesterday ranting on this blog, I'd consider opening up a new browser and finding another place to live. Every town/city/state has its goods and bads but it’s what you make of it. We didn't need yesterday's Top 10 list to tell me it’s a great place to live. Because if it wasn't, I'd leave.

You seriously don't get it do you? Stop with the constant comparisons to other cities already! We get it! Charlotte isn't (fill in name of origin or last location).

How about telling us about what Charlotte IS?

Anonymous said...

I think people in Charlotte need to get over themselves. Every city is not perfect and everyone is not going to like Charlotte so GET OVER IT.

Anonymous said...

Excellent point. Best post so far.

The writers who write articles dont live in the places to give a valid opinion; Charlotte could be one of the best Places left after all the gangs and crime roll all of us over; Charlotte needs a half a million People to come here with wallets or retirement or house paid off or someting iother than the BUMS coming here. These Bums are coming here a stealing and frauding People out of their life savings.
From your Future MAYOR

We have a new Police chief in town and criminals " He is a good man" But if y'all dont walk the line He's from MACON, GEORGIA they dont play around. You will work the roads under a sheriff with a shotgun pointed up in the air. This man means business.

Charlotte has the perpensity to be a world class city but it must finish the outerbelt and get the schools in an order that are learning places. I have been here for 6 years and have seen change but very aggrevating slow growth. The merry go round has to speed up as far as infrastructure goes. The right taxation has to happen to keep up with demand. The criminals must be pushed in one area of town and left their to kill themselves. It starts with one person being nicer than the person before them.

Charlotte has to tear down the poverty by giving areas right out of downtown an eminate domain rate to tear down city blocks at a time and build headquaters and condo's. People are offered twice the value of their home and they can take the home with them , if they want; But the Ghettos have to be collapsed and those People must be given $150 thousand so they can get out of poverty.
The second coming

"perpensity"?

This town used to be horrible. Until all us Yankees moved here. Thats why the ranking keeps going up.

Thats right rednecks. We make your city better!! Get over it stop fighting a war you were not alive for.

You southerners forgive the Germans but not northerners. Why? Do you still want slaves that bad. Are you mad African Americans have rights??

Grow up. Stop hating. This is a nice city with nice people from all over the world. Embrace them and their cultures. You just may learn something!!!

Anonymous said...

AMEN! Well said e!

Anonymous said...

You have a lot of animosity toward Southerners, E. It must really hurt to know that you and your children live in a place in which you'll never be fully accepted.

Anonymous said...

We already know that no matter what we do, we won't be "accepted" anyways, so who cares!

Anonymous said...

8:58. I dont need to feel accepted. Thats why Ive been here for 14 years. When I first got here I worked construction. I cant count the times i was told to go back up north and take 2 ni**ers with me. I knew what I was dealing with along time ago.

I dont let those people get to me. I just live in this pretty city and surround myself with positive people.

I do get a kick out of you hate mongers online though!!

Charlotte is a great safe city. Enjoy it before you cant afford it!!!!

The Charlotte Observer must sell itself to some otherPlace and start redoing the paper; People dont read the Observer so anything we say no one see's unless they spread the newspaper out for their dog to pee on. Lets face it your trying to sell Charlotte to People who know the Observer is a bald face liar. Murders are being done daily and they dont take criminal checks here anywhere; Pedafiles are lining up to move here. Builders are trying rape People out of their life savings. Come on Amy the games over here a new Police cheif had to come here to bail Charlotte out of the GANGS driving around pot shotting People. Masosn , Eastern Star, Kiawanas , Amway, Shriners , Jews with pitchforks and gangsters are running the streets looking for someone to hose. Face it AMY when you loose your job you loose the farm here Car , house dignity. Im calling the Dept of Justice and having them check out the taunting going on here and the footsteps you will hear will be my Government looking into this place.

I agree with everyone that says this city is not all it's cracked up to be. It doesn't seem to have any character.

I don't have kids (which could be why I don't like Charlotte), but I found it interesting that Charlotte is not on any of the lists I've read with the "Top Cities to Raise a Family".

People are flooding in to Charlotte now, but within a couple years, they'll be flooding right back out.

Sure, it's great if you have tons of money, like sports and think shopping at SouthPark passes for culture. But it sold any soul it had to commerce years ago.

And as a native, I've had a chance to watch its simultaneous ascension and decline.

I'd much rather live in Greensboro, truth be told.

Anonymous said...

So go live in Greensboro?

Truth is this is a great location on the map for a city but, if anyone has complaints about what Charlotte lacks I say look to yourself. People come here from cities that have been cities for like 200 years expecting Charlotte to be that overnight. Look if you want things to do, do it. Charlotte does have an advantage over older more established cities like a New York or Atlanta. Charlotte is more like a blank canvass with all the residents being artist with a paint brush. There are some problems with this theory though. Some of the artist/ residents have made some dumb mistakes like UNCC being so far from the center it's in it's own city or the street system that has broke Charlotte up into a group of microcities. The state is also to blame since Raleigh looks at us as the sibling that is doing better but, can't figure out why. Personally, I feel if Charlotte, NC was Charlotte, SC we'd really be a party town! Since we build so many bars and clubs imagine the club scene with a 6 am last call, save for Saturday night we'd really be jumping. Ok, that's a stretch but, we do need to find some type of niche. The other problem is we don't have a true outlet for the underground cultural types. All of the older buildings/areas that could have housed such a movement have been torn down. Then, people build fake places that mock those older buildings and price them way out of reach ex. NODA and South End. The Excelsior Club on Beatties Ford Rd could be "the place" but, the club no longer repesents the new & now but the old. Which in my opinion is not what the club used to be. That could have been our Apollo but instead it's a nightly fish fry for Grandparents who well....you know 60 is the new 20. All I'm saying is there could be alot to do if people would realize that the population is neither 6,000 nor 6,000,000.

I agree. Now if it made it as one of the top ten most corrupt, predjudice, shallow, no where to be if you are down-on-your-luck cities in the world; then I'd give it my vote. Not to mention how senior African-Americans had their homes stolen or tricked from them while city officials looked the other way (a lot of them where involved)! Then there is the factor of not securing a job. With all the cheap labor: Hispanics, though they are deported by the thousands! Who cares if that school is a landmark or less than 10 years old, tear it down! Only the blacks care, white people want to live near and walk to sports arenas!
