A reason to not miss the Big Apple?

Are you an ex New Yorker like me who still sometimes misses the city?

Well, check this out.

Seriously I want to know why it is that you people move here. If you miss New York that badly then go home.

I guess the caustic remark @ 2.49 means that native Charlotteans are offended when someone from "up north" has feelings from the past. I would suggest..."Get a life"

I’m surprised at your surprise that there is hostility in this region towards people from up north. I would imagine that you could move to any city in the world and encounter hostility from the natives if all you did was prattle on endlessly about how better things were back home.

Amy, you're killing me. First you post "North-vs.-South Explained" in which you write that you don't try to generate blog traffic through North vs. South debate and in the SAME DAY you post "A reason not to miss the Big Apple?" the implication being that there are few reasons not to miss NYC if you live in CLT. Please own up to the fact that you use regionalism as bait to attract people to your blog.

I am a former NY'er and have lived in Charlotte for half my life (20 years)

The things I think we tend to miss most are the never ending supply of things to do, places to see, events, broadway and of course the FOOD !

Nothing compares because you can get anything you want and it's the real deal. Not some generic chain restaurant slop. Real authentic food from all corners of the world. If you love food, it's amazing.

We also tend to miss the acceptance of diversity that is sorely lacking in the South. Charlotte is getting better and better with this all the time. As well as the food here has gotten much better too.

When people say they miss NY what they are really saying is the miss the world. It's a melting pot.

But along with it comes big city problems as well. I chose to stay in Charlotte mainly for the weather and the cost of living. Moving uptown has proven to be a great move for us as well.

I'm heading back in 2 weeks for an extended 4 day weekend. Got tickets to see the Eagles play at the garden. Can't wait !

But don't get me wrong, I love Charlotte !!!!

NYC is only a short plane ride away and you can get your fill and then return to the easy life back here.

As a public service, may I remind you, Amy, the subtitle to "New Around Town" is "Your Guide to the Charlotte Region."

Please try to stay on topic or rename your blog.

If you don't like the topics on this Blog, don't read and waste your time commenting on it. The hostility is ridiculous and quite amusing in my opinion.

The topic "New Around Town" would make me think, at least, that other areas will be discussed IN RELATION to Charlotte, as newcomers are from OTHER areas.

Good lord!

Know what I miss? I miss Charlotte the way it was before all the New Yorkers came. All they do is moan about how they miss their favorite food, their old neighborhood, etc. etc. ad nauseum. Well now that all their neighbors have moved here and live in the same neighborhood with them and we have all that horrid food from up there, they still complain! Unbelievable!

Anonymous said...

Poll question...What is the average age of the morons responding to this blog? Can't be more than twelve.

Anonymous said...

Good point, Kim. However...

I think a lot of the animosity stems not so much from "other areas will be discussed IN RELATION to Charlotte" as that it seems too often "Charlotte will be dissed for not having what's in other areas."

I think it would make more sense for a local paper which promotes a "New Around Town" blog to really focus on guiding newcomers to what IS in the region. I mean, what’s the point of bringing up New York City? Like Charlotte will ever be able to hold a candle to that?

Otherwise, why not just call the blog "Charlotte Doesn't Have..." and list all the wonderful things that they had "back where I came from" for a different city each day?

BTW, I'm a transplant myself.

Wow, this is like the double whammy of stupid blog threads: Yet another discussion of some other place that is not Charlotte, combined with fearmongering about how some imagined global warming which is not borne out by the facts is going to destroy places that are right at or just above sea level.

But hey, I'll give you a reason not to miss the Big Apple: The New York Times. As worthless as the Charlotte Observer is, the NYT is 100 times as bad.

Anonymous said...

Hey, The New York Times at least has some thoughtful intellect and is not afraid to take on W and the republican establishment. Go back to USA Today or Rhino Times, if you can't stand quality journalism. I love the weather and low cost of living down here, and I love that the cultural diversity is getting better here (believe me, this place was a backwater 20 years ago). Now if we can only have a little more progressive and opened minded outlook as a city, we will have taken great strides. You don't need New York City to look up to for that. Try closer to home in places such as Ashville, Durham or Chapel Hill. The biggest city in the Carolinas is getting its butt kicked by those smaller communities when it comes to getting into the 21st century.

Mr. Tarrant, I have two words for you: Jayson Blair.

"The biggest city in the Carolinas is getting its butt kicked by those smaller communities when it comes to getting into the 21st century."

Translation: Danimal is a Communist who'd just love it if we were all taxed absolutely to death.

Anonymous said...

Typical kneejerk redneck reaction. Tell me where taxes came into the equation, and why non-rednecks are commies. Go move to the sticks you hayseed.

Anonymous said...

Horrible food up there? Are you KIDDING me? You don't know what good food is.

Learn to read, genius. No one said that all "non-rednecks" are commies; just danimal. And the reason for that statement is that HE said that we should look to places like Chapel Hill, Durham, and Asheville for enlightenment. Those three towns are bastions of left-wing lunacy, especially Asheville, and their political leaders all seek to jack taxes through the roof.

But leave it to danimal or one of his fellow travelers to once again label Southerners as rednecks, hicks, or hayseeds. Next up will be the incest jokes.

Where's the love people ?

We are all part of ONE country. More so ONE planet. Get over all of this silly crap.

People love what they grew up on plain and simple. It's what they know. It's what their mom cooked or their favorite local dive cooked.

For some NYC has the best (that's me) To others down home Southern cooking is the best. I have to admit that I love some home cooked grits with shrimp Charleston style. NYC is my fav just because I can get any type of food. Not so much "NY food" It just so happens that there is every nationality on the planet there. That's why it's so great for sampling all types of cuisine.

But I can see how people may get tired of hearing how much better it is "back where they grew up". I don't do that at all unless I am in total northern company.

Honestly the only thing we miss is the food and higher acceptance level of diversity. Okay, there's more to do as far as cultural things go too. But that can be said for any big city. Charlotte is getting there and as of late it is making big strides.

I would hope that the people posting this really negative comments aren't even from the metro area. If so, that's discouraging. I have personally met and worked with a few locals like this. But overall I have had a great experience living in Charlotte.

Try frequenting uptown and the neighborhoods of Elizabeth, NoDa, Plaza Midwood, Dilworth and SouthEnd and you will find people from all over the country and world. You wont get any of the nonsense you find on this blog. Surround yourself with positive forward thinking people.

Danimal, you sir are an idiot!!!

charlotte_native,

Danimal actually nailed it. Right on, perfectly. The rest of this great big planet may have a different view on things than you. Get use to it or forever live in your miserable existence.

I hear tell we're going to start getting mail here and everything.

What about teeth ?

I want some damn teeth already !

Nothing is more annoying than people who relocate here and then talk about how great it was back from where they came. If it was so great, why did you leave? What also gets tiresome is listening to those who talk about New York City, all the things to do and see... well that's great and all if you have the MONEY to be going to shows and out to eat all the time, especially if you don't live there. It's outrageously expensive to park your car in Manhattan, costly to eat, and then to buy theater tickets, forget it. Who can afford that on a regular basis?? Most people who relocate here from NY do so for the lower cost of living - THOSE folks probably aren't yearning for the expensive entertainment of NYC! I don't miss it one bit, I'll take the chain restaurants and malls over all that, thank you very much.

Anonymous said...

Shed the south, assimilate with the rest of the country, and Charlotte is well on its way to being America's next great city.

Anonymous said...

Why on Earth would I go to a chain restaurant ? I can cook far better at home myself.

If I go out I want to enjoy something different and unusual.

And who the hell needs to park a car while vacationing in NYC ? Laguardia, cab, subways ......period ! You cul-de-sac bimbo.

Just curious - anyone step up for those Starbucks gift cards from Tuesday's post?

LOL

Anonymous said...

I moved here to see what its like to make love to a Southern woman as Im from Ohio; Well, its no different so Im goin back now . good bye signed Northerners

Anonymous said...

Liar !

It's much better since they have no teeth.

Heh Heh !

Anonymous said...

10:28AM - I was referring to parking in NYC IF you live nearby (NJ, CT, Long Island, etc.)and choose to drive into the city, not vacationing, you moron.

Anonymous said...

The Starbucks up North are WAAAAY better than the ones here.

Anonymous said...

Once again to the cul-de-sac Bimbo,

I grew up on L.I. and you take the train in YOU moron.
Same goes for everyone I know in Jersey and CT.

Only a true Burban Moron would drive into NYC to enjoy. Even if it's only for the day. With your mentality it's a wonder you actually moved so close to another city. Why not Hickory, that's likely more your speed.

I don't see what is so wrong about a person moving somewhere else and missing some aspects of the place where they were born and raised. It is only natural to feel that way. THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THIS. It takes time for people to adjust to new places. You southerns need to get over yourselves. It is disgusting.

Maybe if you got out of your little bubble, traveled and lived other places, you might be able to understand.

Anonymous said...

If any of you hicks actually clicked on the link and read the article, it is about how NYC is on the list of cities that might end up underwater because of global warming. The headline of the articles is a reason NOT to miss it. So get over yourself and realize that Charlotte and NC are not utopia. You do not live in some perfect place and NC is not the center of the universe.

And by the way, I know of southern people who were born and raised outside of NC, who miss things (and even complain about Charlotte too) about where they were from, but I guess that is ok though right? Because they are southern too? I guess southerners are born with halo's around their heads and they can never do anything wrong. It shows how messed up your thinking is and it is too bad you were raised to think like that.

Anonymous said...

Southerners seem to think they've cornered the market on charm and hospitality. Think again.

Reynolds Price said it best... "I think we Southerners have talked a fair amount of malarkey about the mystique of being Southern."

Pretty much, yeah. It's an in group - out group thing. Similarly, a black person can critique the black community without catching much flak, but a white person making the same comments would be out of line.

Diversity is overrated. I'm from NY, and I don't miss the "diversity" at all.

Wow, I was just looking here as we planned a vacation to visit what I'm told is a beautiful place. From what I see I'll have to tell my children to not mention where we are from in order to not meet any hostility. This is sad.

If you want to avoid hostility then don't talk while you're here either. The moment you open your mouth to speak it will be obvious that you are not from the South.

I moved from Ny about 6yrs ago and I can honestly say I miss NOTHING about NY.

The only thing I miss is family and friends that are still there and I dread going back
