How walk-able is your hood?

My colleague Amy Rainey just reminded me of a cool Web site that measures how walk-able your neighborhood is. Go to www.walkscore.com and enter your address.

My South Charlotte neighborhood scored a 40 out of 100. And that's about right. Walking our dog around the hood is a fun way to meet and greet the neighbors. But it's about a 10 or 15 minute walk to the Archdale light rail station from my house. And my husband and I have walked to dinner just once and crossing South Boulevard wasn't fun.

I entered my old Dilworth address, where we rented before we bought our house and where we walked to dinner all the time. Score: 83.

I also submitted my old NYC address. Score: 92. I was surprised it wasn't 100. My apartment in Astoria, Queens was just a couple blocks from the subway. I was in easy walking distance of everything I wanted -- movies, dry cleaners, restaurants, bars, grocery, coffee shops, nail salons, etc.

How does your hood score and how does it compare with other places you've lived. Check it out. It's fun.

23 next to Goodwin Park in Matthews.

Odd, since downtown Matthews is about a mile away. Oh well, I still walk into town...

I live in Piper Glen and it only got 42 out of 100. That was very surprising to me, I think it is a very walkabl area!

My address got an 8 also. At first I thought this might be related to safety but my area is very safe. This had everything to do with convenience. There is nothing within two miles of my development but other developments.

My east Charlotte neighborhood of Windsor Park got a 23.

There's a difference between being walk-able - like having side walks and crosswalks at traffic lights - and having a place to walk to.

I must be in Amy's hood.

The score was 38 - I am less than one mile to Archdale Lynx stop; a shade over one mile to Arrowood. There are grocery stores, restaurants, and retail in the area - a lot of it hispanic.

My wife and I walk many places, and we would walk more if they put more stuff around the Archdale station

My 8 neighborhood has sidewalks all over the place. I can walk four miles of sidewalks and never leave the development. The reason the rating was so low said that to go any where you had to drive.

Try using an zip code instead...28204 rated a 94/100.

My walk score is 45… I was rather upset with it. And I was surprised to know that there is another score called drive score to evaluate my house. I found the way to calculate it online at Fizber site (http://drivescore.fizber.com/). I’ve got much better results – 83.

Yes yes I'm sure that Noo York has a much higher score. Maybe you should move back there.

My "hood"? Well it covers the engine on my car, isn't that the purpose of a hood?

I plugged in my current address in Charlotte, my former address in Arlington, VA, my parents, brother, and older sisters addresses (all in Northern VA, but different locations in a 25 mile or so radius) and my other sister's address in LA, CA and IMHO the results are rather misleading. My sister in LA, CA had BY FAR the best walkable score (85) and my old address in Arlington (51) was 2nd best, but neither of those areas are really walkable if you ever spent any time in either location. Do you really want to walk across Wilshire Blvd. or Rt. 50/Arlington Blvd.? Yeah, there are a lot of things in the immediate area, I suppose, that you could walk to, but few people in their right mind would actually DO so.
