Move here without a job?

Yesterday I blogged about a woman looking for work here so she can leave Las Vegas.

Today I'm looking for recent newcomers -- say in the last year or two -- who moved to Charlotte without a job. How did that work out for you? How long did it take for you to find work or are you still looking?

Please email me at abaldwin@charlotteobserver.com and leave your name and daytime phone number. Thanks.

If you move here without a job, you are dumb.

I moved to Charlotte without a job and it took me several months to land a full-time position. I still work for this company so things just turned out right. Take a chance!

I think the paper just ran an article about someone who moved here without a job and is now homeless...dumb in this economy.

Charlottes economy usde to be much better and its not only the recession thats causing problems; Textiles, Furniture and now Tobacco ( Phillip Morris) is moving out to Foriegn lands; People landing here from other Planets have heard that there is milk and honey here and its all a hype; They see the big pretty houses and all the new cars and think the obvious. Just last night on the TV news they talked about all the rampant repossesion of cars in Charlotte;

Charlotte now has 8000 known homeless with 1 million population and Washington only has a mere 12,000 known Homeless with 7 million People; Just look at that ratio ; It is not in the interest of Charlotte to clang the 'dinner bell' here; People are coming here with 'two nickels' clanking in their pockets and the BANKS havent started their toss out yet!

Lets face it BERNAKE ( the great monopoloy money guru) or Fed Chairman thought Charlotte was doing great but the Government counts jobs from Newspapers to get unemployment numbers; In Charlotte this is a hard 'RIGHT TO STARVE ' State ; So , if your hair is parted on the wrong side , you can get fired. As Government elves count the number of jobs in the newspaper in Charlotte, the same job may be in there ten times through that year. Connect the dots .

Lets face it People are coming here just like when the Great Depression hit in the 30s; New York was overwhelmed by People ging there on RUMORS , just like Charlotte. This made things much worse as rents rose because of supply and demand and jobs were not there like many thought. People during the Great Depression started roaming around and signs would be on STATE BORDERS stating " go to the next State no work here"

Amy, the Homeless are growing exponentially since I have been here five years; They are not recorded wellon the unemployment books because most live out behind your houses and woods; Its not safe for them or us; If I was the MAYOR I would take over the shit hole Motels and make them a Homeless joint that they could work painting and renovating for their rent;

Hey, it's Mr. Talkwithcaps. Why don't you put all that stuff in one post, rather than several?

You would be crazy to move to Charlotte without a job. I made the stupid mistake of moving here without a job and it took me over a year to find a permanent full time job.

look at the Charlotte Observers parent company; who would ever think they would be in debt 30 billion dollars. When People stop buying .35 cent newspapers thats scary. Look the Government can start the printing presses going again and circulate money and BY GOD PEOPL dont stop spending by all means . Homeless can be remedied by only $2.00 a week from everybodies payroll , so why not get these People in at night. I want to be your MAYOR. Im not Leo SAYOR I want to be your MAYOR . I wont even take a payer.

Geez, why all the negativity? Then again I say that anytime I read any of the comments on blogs here. I swear it must be 3 or 4 people flooding the boards with multiple messages. Anyways....

I moved here without a job 2 years ago. It took about 2 months to find something decent, and since then I've moved on to something even better.

There is plenty of opportunity here, and most other places, for folks who don't mind busting their a$$.

Believe it or not, the cost of living here is pretty darn low. Even better, the salaries here don't seem to be much different than other places. So if you're coming from another bigger city, which is probably a lot more expensive, this is a cheap place to live, with plenty of work available. I say roll the dice, save up a few bucks, quit your job, and move to Charlotte.

Moved here a little over 2 yrs ago w/no job and had a full time w/i 3 mos and have too since moved onto another position. It wasn't dumb and remains the best decision I ever made. I suppose I could've been like most people and talked about doing something and never done it.

My daughter moved there recently and had a job within 10 days. She didn't start at the top but still secured a full time decent job at over $10. per hour.
Did I want her to go, No, but I am very proud of her to have had the guts to experience life somewhere else. I know she'll come home but for now, she is out on her own and alone and I know she will be fine.
Our family is behind her in whatever her choices may be, because we know they will be the right ones. xo

We made the move here about 2 years ago. Neither of us had a problem finding a job. As a matter of fact I was inundated in the financial field.

You probably dont have young children, but for those of you who do... I made a HUGE mistake moving to the Charlotte/Mecklenburg Co. school district. They are horrible and have many many problems. My children were in middle school and had 4 different math (ALGEBRA) teachers within one year along with tons of substitutes. Some teachers would show up for one day and quit!!
We moved again in about 18 months to Cabarrus Co. just for the schools. So far, its been great

I don't know if you are still looking for a comment, but I just moved here in January because of my wife landed a job in the area. I've been looking since October (wife moved here in Novmber) and still no luck. What makes this worse is that in my old location, I recieved 4 unsolicited interview requests for new jobs within a month, and had to turn them all down. Here I can barely even get an interview.

My family & I are relocating here from Atlanta. We decided to move here about a month ago, thinking that it would take several months for either of us to find a true career jump (not just land a job) and that we would end up in the Char area by summer. I put my resume out on Monster, had an interview in 3 days and a great job offer 10 days later. We are now relocated to Charlotte and my wife is in the salary negotiation stage with a fortune 250 company. I believe it is all about the person that is looking and not the market. If you are marketable and have worked hard in your career to create opportunity for yourself, then Charlotte is a great place to move.

I came to Charlotte about 9 months ago. I have a very good friend who moved here 3 years ago, and after visiting a few times and seeing the area, the economy, etc. I decided it was time to make a change in my life. I saved up, quit my job, packed my bags and started on a new adventure. I did a lot of research on the area, read this newspaper often, and scanned the internet for job offerings. Within 60 days of moving in, I landed a job. My advice to the Las Vegans moving here--call headhunters, work the internet job sites (CareerBuilder, Monster) and reach out to anyone you may know here, even if its "a friend of a friend". During my interviews, I emphasized what a risk taker I was for picking up and moving with no safety net--that impressed them! So far, I'm glad I've made the move! No risk--no reward!
