Going all out for Halloween?

I'm looking forward to Halloween this year. We don't have big plans. We'll just walk around the neighborhood with our toddler girl and dog. The girl won't wear her witch's hat though and it's questionable the dog will fit into her pumpkin outfit, which gets more snug every year.

Among my more memorable Halloweens:

Three years ago, Jeff and I dressed up as Bree and Rex from "Desperate Housewives." If you need your hair done for your costume -- I had a French twist -- but don't want to pay a ton I highly recommend the Aveda school off South Boulevard.

My NYC Halloweens were memorable for reasons other than it being Halloween. Five years ago, my husband and I had dinner at the renowned Rainbow Room in New York. It was my last night in New York before moving to Charlotte the next day. And a year or two before that we saw the Rockettes Christmas show -- yes, on Halloween, which was a surreal mixing of holidays.

And, of course, there was Halloween in Athens, Ohio, where I went to school. If you know about it, enough said.

So today's questions: What are some of your memorable Halloweens? What are your plans this year? And if you are a newcomer to the Charlotte area, is it a bigger or less big deal here than other places you've lived?

How, exactly does this post (as with so many others) "guide" the newcomer "to the Charlotte Region?"

barkomomma: The point of Amy's blog isn't to guide newcomers to Charlotte, but to see how many times she can mention New York or Ohio in a single post.

Anonymous 10:49 and 12:43--you guys are so mean spirited---please get a life.
R
barkomomma---newcomers can write about their plans for Halloween in our fair city as well as how they celebrated Halloween in years past.
Everyone lighten up--you are giving southerners a bad name. Southerners are supposed to be hospitable. What gives?

^Southern hospitality only goes so far and these carpetbaggers are really testing my patience.

This has nothing to do with this particular blog, but it's Halloween night, and I swear there have been more teenagers and full-grown adults knocking on my door than children.

I enjoy Halloween and seeing children in their costumes, having fun. Not to share with a bunch of freeloading ass adults.

This is my first Halloween in Charlotte, next year my lights will be off...

Anyone else have this happen? How did you handle it?

someone's obviously holding a magnet too close to the compass because these blogs (not just this one, but practically all of them) sponsored by the O have no sense of direction at all.

maybe old media fits into new media like a square peg into a round hole?

ah! so it's like corporate business? don't confuse me with the truth?

buh-bye

I don't understand Halloween in Charlotte. Everywhere I went, kids were being driven around in cars to different houses. Seriously, the point of trick-or-treating is to walk from house to house. I was astonished at how many people drove their kids around. No wonder child obesity is at an all-time high. People drive their kids around to load up on candy...

^It's not just Charlotte.

Hey, Alison, we didn't get nearly as many trick or treaters as the past couple years. I wondered what was up. Were your numbers down? And we usually get a lot of kids piling in and out of vans and SUVs -- but not so much this year. We went through only half our candy. I heard on the radio this a.m. -- I forget which station -- that trick or treating is changing because of safety issues and there are more choices of parties kids can go to. I know the church nearby was doing a party, so I wonder if that's it. Anyhow, thanks for reading my blog.
